Gyurcsany promised to introduce laws within two weeks to clean up politics

Hungary's Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany promised to introduce laws within two weeks to clean up politics in the wake of a corruption scandal that has rattled his government. Gyurcsany last week became the first sitting Hungarian prime minister since the end of communism to be questioned by prosecutors in a case involving charges that a minor politician in his Socialist party had abused government funds. He said bills to crack down on graft would include transparent rules for party and campaign financing and stricter controls on the sources of wealth and jobs of public officials.

Janos Zuschlag, a former Socialist MP, was detained last week on charges that he abused funds from the youth ministry between 2002 and 2004. He denies the charges.
