I don't think tighter legislation will make a difference. Crazy people will pop up now and then and kill people with guns, that's a fact and nothing is going to change that. It's the times we live in. I don't feel comfortable with only the police/govt having guns. I don't trust them to protect us in an emergency. I believe in people taking care of themselves instead of relying on the govt. for everything.

While US headlines in 2007 were dominated by celebrity gossip, next year's US presidential election and Iraq, humanitarian stories went largely unreported, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres. The aid organization, also known as Doctors Without Borders, identified violence, forced displacement and disease in the Central African Republic, Somalia and Sri Lanka among the top 10 underreported stories of 2007. The list, released on Thursday, also highlighted what it described as the forgotten crises in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia, Myanmar, Zimbabwe and Chechnya.

The group began producing its top 10 list in 1998 in response to the poor US media coverage of a devastating famine in southern Sudan. In its 10th list, it said the ongoing toll of tuberculosis and childhood malnutrition continued to be largely ignored by the media. The organization said eight of the countries and issues highlighted on its list accounted for just 18 minutes of coverage on the top three US television networks' nightly newscasts from January until November.

A US prosecutor claimed three covert Venezuelan agents offered two million dollars to hush up an alleged attempt to funnel 800,000 dollars from Venezuela to the electoral campaign of Cristina Kirchner, who is now Argentina's president.

That allegation was made after the Venezuelans were arrested in Miami last week and charged with failing to notify US authorities they were agents of the Venezuelan government. The arrests followed the seizure in August of a bag with 800,000 dollars in cash found in Buenos Aires aboard a chartered flight from Caracas. Guido Antonini, a dual US-Venezuelan national, who was carrying the suitcase, later flew back to his home in Miami, where the defendants allegedly approached him.

US approved sanctions against Myanmar

The US Senate approved sanctions against Myanmar's multi-million dollar gemstone industry to punish the military regime over its deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protests. The Burma Democracy Promotion Act outlaws the import of gems and timber from Myanmar and imposes fresh financial sanctions and travel restrictions on the junta's leaders and their associates. The legislation also creates a position of special representative and policy coordinator for Myanmar who would work with the Southeast Asian nation's neighbors and the European Union to press for change in the country.

The House of Representatives passed similar legislation last week, but it needs to vote on the Senate version because it was amended. The final bill would then go to US President George W. Bush for his signature. Last week, Bush threatened to spearhead a global campaign to step up sanctions against Myanmar if it continues to ignore calls for a democratic transition. At least 31 people were killed and 74 went missing in the suppression in September of peaceful protests led by Buddhist monks, according to a UN report.

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress party is embroiled in a bitter leadership battle. Members of the ANC are set to choose a leader next week - the favourite to win is ex-Deputy President Jacob Zuma ahead of incumbent President Thabo Mbeki.

The Zuma case has been dismissed by a partial judge because of delays, however the delays were nothing compared to what the normal South African experiences in courts today. He was given preferential treatment. He was set up in the rape case, but his actions there nonetheless expose him as an unethical permissive and irresponsible man. I agree wholeheartedly with Desmond Tutu. Real leadership is needed, but there is none!

US Army upgraded a base in Japan

The US Army upgraded a base in Japan into a key Asian operational hub, despite protests by local leaders who oppose a greater influx of US troops. Camp Zama on Tokyo's outskirts was named a forward headquarters of the I Corps, which is under the Pacific Command but whose troops have also been sent to Iraq. The I Corps headquarters remains at Fort Lewis in the western US state of Washington, but the forward unit gives Camp Zama the communications network to coordinate in response to an emergency.

The Central Readiness Force of the Japanese army -- known as the Self-Defence Forces due to the pacifist constitution -- also plans to move here by the 2012 fiscal year as Tokyo takes a more active military role abroad. More than 40,000 US troops are based in Japan and have often had uneasy relations with local populations who accuse them of causing crime and noise. The Camp Zama upgrade was part of a realignment plan agreed by Washington and Tokyo in 2005 which is part of a global transformation by the US military to meet new challenges. Under the deal, around 8,000 US troops are expected to leave Japan for the US Pacific island of Guam.
