Puerto Rico's status
Puerto Rico is a US territory. Everyone born in Puerto Rico is a US citizen and enjoys the rights under US Constitution. At this very moment, in the year 2007, the people in this island are undergoing a serious problem of distress. They need for help in determining a major crisis and problem, which they haven’t been able to take care of, for around Forty years. If we can, we tend to help and protect another member of our country, especially a citizen of our United States.
In these past Forty years, they have had many elections/referendums and have been voting for one of three major statuses being, Commonwealth of the United States (actually what it is for decades), to become a state of the United States and becoming an independent country of their own.
Every time an election/referendum of this nature has been conducted, the Commonwealth of The United States has won, Popular Democratic Party. The main problem here are the two parties; New Progressive Party (statehood) and The Puerto Rico Independence Party that perpetually insist on these referendums over and over, making this election/referendum a joke as politics is concerned. I said a joke (strictly politicians) but, in reality we are dealing with the lives of men, women and children, their well being either emotionally, economically and education to name a few.
The majority of Puerto Ricans are honest, hard working people with the same dreams and desires we all have. Just in case, let us not stereotype the majority for that lazy few, which are only looking for a handout, happens in every country.
What we need to do is listen to their request and find a definite and absolute solution, so they could begin to get on with their lives. We owe that to them, since they too have spilled their blood, as we have in past and present military conflicts. In addition, the Puerto Rican people have contributed to our way of American life. Did you ever ask who came up with the three point line in our NBA? Who was the 65th Infantry in past wars? Who was Jose Ferrer, Raul Julia, who are the parents of another American Jennifer Lopez, which one has won an Oscar of The Academy like Benicio del Toro plus more? (This to name a few).
