Justice for Uganda’s people

Representatives for the Lord's Resistance Army rebels are asking victims of the conflict what they believe should happen - whether justice is gained via traditional methods, the country's courts or through the International Criminal Court.

I believe as much Ugandan want justice to prevail; they are tired and badly affected economically and socially by the war. What this rebel outfit committed is beyond just reconciliation as that would show others to be in any part of Africa that forgiveness is possible after all crimes against humanity and torture. I think these criminals must be sentenced in the international courts. They need hard punish to his actions.

France and the United States alliance

French President Nicolas Sarkozy hailed the friendship between France and the United States and paid tribute to American sacrifices in World War II, in a rare address to the US Congress. Arriving for a joint session of the US Senate and the House of Representatives, the French leader received a lengthy and warm applause, including several standing ovations, as he praised the United States for its world influence.

Sarkozy was speaking a day after receiving an effusive welcome from President George W. Bush at an exclusive reception. French-US ties had soured under Sarkozy's predecessor Jacques Chirac who firmly opposed the war in Iraq and the US-led invasion in 2003. But Sarkozy, who is often called "Sarko the American" is one of the most pro-US French leaders in decades and clearly aims to show Bush and Americans that France has turned a page on the past.

The credit crisis

Almost everyone, in various parts of the world will be impacted by the credit crisis, off course some more than others. A family in Cleveland U.S., will be hit hard as their house value will drop significantly due to lack of demand. In a city like San Francisco, where the economy and job market is booming, then someone like me won’t feel the impacted through real estate prices but perhaps the rapid depression of finance stocks and greater difficulty to borrow. It’s a global economy and whether we realize it or not, directly or indirectly, we’re all impacted to some extent.

China and the United States agreed to open a defence hotline

China and the United States agreed to open a defence "hotline," deepen dialogue on nuclear issues, and increase military exchanges, but US concerns over the rapid Chinese military build-up remain. In talks with Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan to kick off his two-day China trip, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates also sought to persuade Beijing to back tougher economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

The underlying US aim in seeking such a dialogue is to avoid a miscalculation between the two nuclear powers. China has stated that its annual military budget rose 17.8 percent this year to 45 billion dollars. But the Pentagon believes China's military spending is as high as 125 billion dollars a year.

Hugo Chávez: Leader of Latin America populism

Who holds the world's oil? You might assume it's in the hands of big private oil companies like ExxonMobil. But in fact, 77 percent of the world's oil reserves are held by national oil companies with no private equity. And the percentage of oil controlled by state-owned companies is likely to continue rising, mainly because of the demographics of oil. Deposits are being exhausted in wealthy countries and are being found largely in developing countries, where oil tends to belong to the state.

Nationalization is also a political trend in some regions, mainly Latin America, where the populist presidents of Bolivia and Ecuador have made it part of their discourse. They are led, of course, by Hugo Chávez of Venezuela. He has made private producers accept, by force, state control of their operations. When they wouldn't, as in the case of Exxon Mobil and Conoco-Phillips, he simply nationalized their holdings using illegal moves and violence in some cases. Chávez has also asserted his control over Venezuela's state oil company, firing employees not militant in his political party, which before him operated very much like a private, profit-driven enterprise. Now this oil industry is in decline and the corruption is the only rule.

US military organized robotic cars race

Robotic cars competed Saturday in a high-stakes race organized by the US military, which hopes to make driverless vehicles weapons on urban battlefields by 2015. The competition was staged at an unused military based in Victorville, a California town 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Los Angeles, and promises a first-place prize of two million dollars. Cars and trucks with electronic brains, sensors, radar and other sophisticated gear crafted to eliminate the need for humans at steering wheels had to maneuver 100 kilometers along mock city streets in less than six hours.

The event began with mechanics, one-by-one, moving the eleven competitors to the starting line. At the fateful moment, drivers abandoned the vehicles, which began moving on their own, eliciting cheers from thousands of spectators. The cars picked up pace as they found their way along streets of the closed-down base without any help. Forty other cars, driven by people, set out with the robot vehicles to simulate city traffic. Teams that qualified to be in the "DARPA Challenge" include those from prestigious US universities such as Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Virginia Tech, where 33 people were slaughtered in a tragic shooting spree in April.

US government is considering closing a war-on-terror detention center

The US government is considering closing a war-on-terror detention center at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and granting it detainees substantially greater rights. The plan also called for possibly moving most of the detainees to the United States.

One proposal that is being discussed would overhaul the procedure for determining whether detainees are properly held by granting them legal representation at detention hearings and by giving federal judges, not military officers, the power to decide whether suspects should be held. The move would be necessary in the event of the Guantanamo detention center's closure because moving the detainees to US soil would require giving them enhanced protections.

US naval forces in the Gulf are to conduct a crisis response exercise

US naval forces in the Gulf are to conduct a crisis response exercise involving a mock oil spill at a Bahraini port.

US forces began exercises in the Gulf including response to a tropical cyclone that devastates a notional regional nation, destroying its critical infrastructure and displacing thousands of citizens. The week-long drills will also include a response to a mock oil spill from a damaged tanker at sea, to be staged at Mina Salman Port in Manama. The exercises were aimed at enhancing capacity to respond to crises, and it linked the drills to potential disaster situations or oil spills without mentioning military conflict.

Evo Morales: The new enemy of the United States

After winning the presidency in December 2005, Morales has increased Bolivia's annual natural gas revenues from $300 million to $2 billion a year by exerting greater state control over the industry. Water utilities have reverted to state control and authorities are negotiating the re-nationalization of the country's main telecommunications company, Entel, which is owned by Telecom Italia SpA. Officials have indicated electrical power could be next. Morales has allied himself closely with Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's leftist president, and Fidel Castro, Cuba's aging leader.

Those politics have not endeared him to the United States, his nemesis in the late 1980s and 1990s when he led coca growers, or "cocaleros", in protests against Washington-directed forced eradication campaigns. The plant's small green leaf has been chewed as a mild stimulant here for millenia, but is best known outside the country as the base ingredient of cocaine.

Morales will try to implant the Cuban communism in Bolivia. He is a criminal.

New Al Qaeda's audio

Al Qaeda's No. 2 figure harshly criticized Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi in an audio recording released, accusing him of being an enemy of Islam and threatening a wave of attacks against the North African country because it has improved relations with the U.S.

In a 28-minute recording titled "Unity of the Ranks," Ayman Zawahiri also said the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group was joining ranks with Al Qaeda. The recording could not be independently verified, but it was posted on a website commonly used by insurgents and carries the logo of Al Qaeda's media production house, As Sahab. The recording also carries a message from Abu Laith al Libi, a Libyan Al Qaeda commander in Afghanistan who accused Kadafi of decades of tyranny.
