Taiwan has accepted an invitation from China to restart bilateral talks. Bilateral talks between China and Taiwan have been suspended for a decade but the election of Ma Ying-jeou as Taiwan's president in March has brought about a rapid thaw in relations. China has invited Taiwanese officials to attend talks in Beijing from 11 June, with the focus on tourism and charter flights. Chinese state media Xinhua said the talks would cover the issue of mainland tourists visiting Taiwan and the establishment of direct regular charter flights.

The immediate result of the talks will be more economic progress and reassurance that there will be peace for quite a some time. That is a good thing for all people. A civilization is stronger when its people are working together. Some people may still want independence but if you look at the Middle East, the Arab nations would not come to aid their fellow Arabs in Iraq even though they share similar culture and history. Chinese people should avoid disunity or they will all suffer.

Prices have more than doubled in the past year to $135 a barrel, pushing up the price of fuel, energy bills and food.

In the USA in 1970, gasoline was 34 cents per gallon. Gold was $35 an ounce. So an ounce of gold bought about 100 gallons of gasoline. Today, gold is $920 per ounce and gasoline $4. So an ounce of gold will buy about 230 gallons of gasoline. Priced in gold, gasoline is now less than half what it was in 1970. The problem isn't the price of oil; the problem is money is becoming worthless, and wages are not keeping up with this inflation.

Moqtada al-Sadr called for a protest campaign

Iraqi anti-American Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has called for a protest campaign to force Baghdad to abandon a proposed deal that will extend the US troop presence in Iraq beyond 2008. Sadr said the proposed Status of Forces Agreement aimed at giving a legal basis to US troops after the December 31 expiry of a UN mandate defining their current status, was "against Iraqi national interests". His powerful movement planned to send delegations to neighbouring countries and to the West and to international bodies such as the United Nations, the Arab League and the European Ubnion to explain its position.

Sadr said the Iraqi government should consult the people before entering into any deal with Washington. US President George W. The third time was the charm for a Neuqua Valley High School student who wants to express his sentiments on homosexuality by wearing a "Be Happy, Not Gay" T-shirt to class. Neuqua sophomore Alex Nuxoll had twice filed for an injunction that would suspend "the school's policy that allows speech in favor of homosexual conduct, but bans speech critical of homosexual conduct," according to his attorneys at the Alliance Defense Fund.

And twice courts had denied that request. But on Wednesday the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit reversed the lower courts' rulings against Nuxoll, saying the district court must order Neuqua to suspend its ban on the shirt while the civil rights lawsuit filed by Nuxoll and Neuqua grad Heidi Zamecnik proceeds.

Several dozen experts crowded into a computer-filled room inside the US Secret Service Headquarters in Washington in sections marked off as chemicals, transportation, telecommunications, state and local governments, and other sectors, for the five-day exercise. Thousands more were tied into the exercise elsewhere in the US, in Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and in major companies like Dow Chemical, Wachovia bank, ABB and Cisco.

They fielded some 1,800 "injects," various types of challenges, from hacker break-ins and extortion demands to DNS amplification attacks -- dangerous intensified versions of denial of service attacks that seek to overwhelm and shut down networks. Suharto's accomplishments in building Indonesia's economy and infrastructure do not compensate for his venality, corruption, or brutality. His legacy in East Timor is especially damning. While I am not an Indonesian and thus cannot assess his legacy firsthand, I know enough about him to know that he should not be missed. However, I will leave the final verdict to the historians.

3,200 additional troops to Afghanistan
